Franklin Local Board Waiuku subdivision member Brendon Crompton has resigned.

Mr Crompton, who served a term as a district councillor and was in his second term on the local board, resigned on 2 June effective immediately.

Franklin Local Board decided at its meeting on 25 June not to replace Mr Crompton before the elections, in accordance with the Local Electoral Act 2001.

With Auckland Council elections looming in October, board chair Angela Fulljames says appointing a replacement is unwarranted.

If a member resigns within 12 months of a local body election, a board can leave the position vacant or appoint an eligible person to fill the vacancy.

"Despite what many people think, there’s no requirement for a board to appoint the highest polling, or any candidate, from a previous election," Ms Fulljames says.

"It’s a great shame to lose Brendon, who was a ‘doer’, a hard-working, experienced and well-liked member, but I’m sure we will manage to get through until the election," board member Sharlene Druyven says.

Mr Crompton did not intend to restand in the 2019 election and is leaving to commit more time to his charity work with New Zealand Police Blue Light.

Ms Druyven will continue as the Waiuku subdivision’s sole representative, with support from fellow members.
