Auckland's Future In Progress

Published: 28 June 2019

By 2050 the population of Tāmaki Makaurau is projected to rise to 2.4 million. That’s about the size of Vancouver or Brisbane or the entire size of Slovenia.

With growth comes opportunity. Increased diversity brings fresh ideas to the city and breeds innovation. A larger population can support more commercial activity which means more jobs and more economic prosperity not just for our city, but for all New Zealand. More nightlife, more community events, more places to eat out, more vibrancy. These are just some of the upsides of a growing city.

That’s not to say there aren’t downsides to growth, too. We’re all experiencing the growing pains; the pressure on our housing, infrastructure and the environment are well documented, not to mention the day-to-day disruption that comes as part and parcel of large transformative projects. And it’s critical that all Aucklanders can benefit from the social and economic prosperity of a growing city and enjoy a good quality of life.

July's OurAuckland

So, what does our future look like?

Over the month of July, we’ll be talking to a range of residents – from business owners and students to community leaders – to find out what they want from future Auckland. They’ll share their aspirations for the city they love and tell us what they want to be left behind in the past.

We’ll also take a closer look at the plans that are in place to guide us towards 2050 and profile some of the exciting projects that are transforming Tāmaki Makaurau into one of the best cities in the world to live in.
