Hurstmere Road transformation update
Hurstmere Road concept design

A project to transform Takapuna's Hurstmere Road into a more open, modern and lively beachside destination was granted resource consent to proceed this month.

The project is now heading into the tender stage, and a start date for works will be set and communicated once a contract has been negotiated and confirmed. The aim is to begin construction in early 2020 following the busy Christmas trading period.

Late last month, Watercare took the opportunity to bring forward maintenance and repair works to their wastewater pipes located between 2 and 128 Hurstmere Road. Those works are expected to be completed shortly and include pipe flushing, repairs to tree root damaged sections, and relining pipes to extend their operational life.

The final detailed design for the Hurstmere Road project will be released shortly and will incorporate some changes as a result of the consent process. These changes include an increase in the number of trees being planted. Native Puriri will be planted instead of Pohutukawa in an effort to avoid potential issues connected to the Myrtle Rust disease. Cabbage trees will also be planted in the controlled rain gardens.

Keep an eye on OurAuckland for further updates on this project over the coming months.
