Make a splash this summer

Published: 11 September 2019

Applications are now open for paid summer lifeguard positions at our pools across the region.

If you are a confident swimmer with strong communication skills and an interest in community wellbeing, then this could be the role for you.

You’ll receive on the job training and join a team of passionate people in a fun and inspiring culture.

Otara Pool and Leisure Centre’s Aquatics Team Leader Samual Kau says “besides a basic level of swimming, you just need to have good people skills and bring the right attitude. All rescue and work techniques are taught and practiced on the job.”

Sam first started as a summer lifeguard himself and over his years on the job has gained a lot of valuable experience.

“Being a lifeguard has changed my life. When I first started as summer lifeguard I never imagined where it could take me, and now I’m the aquatics team leader.

"Each day is a new challenge, one day I could be kayaking the next I would be teaching kids lifeguard techniques. The best part of it all is being able to meet people from different backgrounds.”

Sam, who was lifeguard of the year in 2016 says lifeguard positions can open the door for people looking to kick start their career in either fitness, wellbeing or physical education.

“It’s an exciting role and gives you the chance to build your confidence and leadership skills,” he says.
