Papakura badminton club gets new deal

Chasing a shuttlecock just got cheaper for Counties-Manukau badminton lovers.

Papakura Local Board has renewed Counties-Manukau Badminton Association’s lease on its Elliott Street hall and knocked the price back.

The annual lease costs have been cut from $100 to $1.

The association got a 10-year lease from the former Papakura District Council in 2009, with a right of renewal from July this year. The lease will now expire on 30 June 2029.

Counties Manukau Badminton fosters, controls and advances the game in the area through inter-club and inter-association matches, championships and tournaments, and also makes the courts available for casual hire as well as offering school holiday programmes and an annual intermediate/secondary school competition.

There are almost 250 players in clubs affiliated to the association, and another 150 who play on a casual basis.

The group hopes to extend the building to add another six courts when it has the necessary funding.
