Improvements at Beach Haven make it the perfect spot for a family picnic this summer

Improvements at Beach Haven’s beach has made it the perfect spot for a family picnic and safe high-tide swimming this summer.

On Saturday, the local community celebrated the successful transformation and unveiling of Frank Larking’s historic rowboat into a new play feature on Larking’s Landing.

Local legend Frank Larking worked for 10 years to build a beach from what use to be a rocky shelf. He transported materials for it across the harbour in hundreds of trips in his dinghy to create the sanded beach we see today.

In recent weeks, several other improvements have been completed including the installation of new furniture, signage, lookout platform and paths throughout.

The beach’s heritage style recreational wharf will also be rebuilt and improved this summer. When completed, it will have a new floating pontoon platform connected by a gangway to enable safer fishing and diving at its end, and new safer handrails and seating installed.

Kaipātiki Local Board John Gillon says the works look great and have been worth the wait.

“We’re proud of how it's all looking now and pleased with what our investment has delivered for the community in Beach Haven.

"It’s looking amazing, and its a great spot for those with young children looking to enjoy a high tide dip as there are no big waves it has consistently good beach water quality.”
