Across our region, there’s plenty going on indoors to keep you busy whatever the weather. Don’t let grey skies and rain stop you from exploring what Auckland has to offer this summer.


The warm, humid environment of the Wintergardens in Auckland Domain offers a good escape from a summer storm. Head along to see exotic, heat-loving tropical plants, or New Zealand ferns.

Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki

This summer, New Zealand’s premier gallery boasts the largest ever exhibition staged, Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art, until Sunday 9 May. Check out the event listing for more details and the ‘what’s on’ page to find more fun activities.

Auckland Museum

It’s a classic rainy-day destination for a reason and a LEGO® extravaganza, with the unmissable Brickman Awesome: Epic LEGO® Creations exhibition available until Sunday 28 February, as well as war planes, bricks galore, treasure hunting and kid-friendly activities.

Indoor pools

Council-owned pools are free for those 16 and under. Head to West Wave in Henderson for its wave pool, Glenfield for great hydroslides, or the Tepid Baths for spas and saunas. Check for pools near you.

Reading at our libraries

Read, relax and reset this summer with Auckland Council Libraries’ new online reading programme, Summer Reading, Sorted on their new online platform, Beanstack. All forms of reading can be recorded and you are eligible for prizes as you reach a milestone or complete activities. Visit for more details.
