Auckland’s Karangahape Road community is getting ready to party and everyone is invited.

First Thursdays is happening on 5 December with two parties to celebrate the opening of the east and west blocks of the Karangahape Road - ending months of construction as part of the Karangahape Road Enhancements project.

From 6pm to 9pm this Thursday, both ends of the street will have a variety of live entertainment, art and markets.

The project is being delivered by Auckland Council and Auckland Transport and will see the creation of more cycleways, improved public transport and better pedestrian connections. Construction is estimated to be completed by late 2020.

Supported by Auckland Council, First Thursdays is part of a development response plan to liven the street while the infrastructural projects are ongoing.

A colourful and popular destination, with a flourishing residential and business community, Karangahape Road is one of the busiest roads in the region with thousands of people travelling along it daily. Once the City Rail Link’s Karangahape Station opens (with entrances on Mercury Lane and Beresford Square) there will be an influx of new people arriving and departing daily from Karangahape Road.

Co-owner of Eighthirty Coffee Roasters Christy Tennent is excited about the prospect of newcomers discovering the lively precinct.

“With better bike access and cycle lanes, it will be better for pedestrians and the local community in general.”

Christy says while the construction has been hard for some businesses, she believes the end goal will be worth it.

“The street is starting to take shape and look really nice… I hope it will only benefit this unique and diverse community and help make it more vibrant.”

She encourages people to attend the event with plenty of activities for all ages.

“The kids can have a go making dinosaurs from coffee cups and our talented staff will be showing off their artistic talents with a group art exhibition called AM/PM : on and off the clock. Everyone is welcome.”
