Get active with AKL Paths: running and walking routes for beginners

Whether you're in training for an event, planning an evening jog, or looking for a way to get fit and active over the summer months, AKL Paths is a great resource for finding a route that suits you. 

Why run the same route every day when there are more than 250 routes across Auckland for you to try? From short walking tracks to shared paths, accessible routes, kid-friendly tracks and coastal adventures, you're sure to find something that motivates you.

North

Murrays to Rothesay Bay Path

Train with AKL Paths: For the beginner 1

3.5km.  

Take in the stunning views of the Hauraki Gulf towards Rangitoto on this elevated cliffside path. Totally paved there are also some steps to negotiate along the way. This path is a brilliant way of getting your motivation going, especially with an early morning run as the sun rises. Take your togs to jump in the sea for a post-run swim.

Devonport to Stanley Bay Path

3km 

It is hard to beat this lovely little path right in the heart of Devonport. The shared path primarily follows Calliope Road from Devonport village to Stanley Bay. Views of Auckland City and the Waitematā are absolutely incredible as are some of the historic villas and character homes. Stanley Bay offers some of the best views of the navy ships when they are dockside at the Naval Base.

West

Archibald to Brains Path

4km.  

Situated in Kelston, this path takes you along the shores of the Whau River. With carparks at both Archibald and Onewherowhero / Brains Parks you can choose your starting place for the loop. In addition to the beauty there is a short steep section to keep you on your toes as you train.

Hobsonville Point Path

5.5 km.

Based at the old Hobsonville Air Force Base, Te Ara Manawa weaves its way around the point’s coastline. The path is mostly flat terrain and you can do the whole loop or parts of it. Take in the stunning views as you explore the unique history of this part of Auckland. Finish off with a coffee or a cool beverage in the old hangers by the ferry terminal that have been repurposed for restaurants, cafes and bars.

Central

Eric Armishaw to Waterview Path

Train with AKL Paths: For the beginner 5

3.2km.  

This path connects the Waterview Reserve and the Eric Armishaw Park in Point Chevalier. Great for parents to run, while kids can cycle to build confidence with either sealed paths or boardwalks making up this route. Keep the kids close if you are doing this together as there are a few busy roads along the route but make use of the pedestrian crossing points to allow for safe passage.

Pukekawa Gardens and Museum Path

Train with AKL Paths: For the beginner 6

1.8km.  

This short loop in the Auckland domain is great for laps. The path starts at the duck pond carpark and incorporates passing the Wintergardens and the War Memorial Museum. Given it is in the Domain this is a great location for that lunchtime run if you work in the central city.

East

Musick Point Path

Train with AKL Paths: For the beginner 7

3.2km.  

This nice scenic route can be found in Halfmoon Bay overlooking the Tāmaki River mouth. Running along the path will give you views across the Hauraki Gulf to Rangitoto, Browns, Motuihe and Waiheke Islands. The former radio transmission station along the route was a key location for communications in the South Pacific campaign of WW2 Take care of golf balls along the way as you are sharing the area with golfers at the Howick Golf Club.  

 

Lloyd Elsmore Path

Train with AKL Paths: For the beginner 8

1.5km.  

Located at Lloyd Elsmore Park, this has path connects you with a wide range of activities. A BMX pump track, the pools and leisure centre, splash pad, the Howick Historical Village and wide-open fields mean there is something for everyone. The avenue of pohutakawa trees is particularly majestic to run along.

South

Māngere Centre Path

Train with AKL Paths: For the beginner 9

1.8km. 

This flat concrete path in the heart of Māngere is great for getting started on your fitness journey. Starting outside the Moana Nui-ā-Kiwa Pool and Leisure Centre the route wanders its way around the walkways and quiet streets of this South Auckland suburb. A really helpful addition on this path is the dots that mark the path. This shorter route is also ideal for running laps.

Tōtara Bridle Path

Train with AKL Paths: For the beginner 10

3.5km  

The scenic bridle path provides a great opportunity to enjoy a stroll around Tōtara Park. The wetlands and streambeds are home to local birdlife like pūkeko, kōtare (kingfisher) mallard duck, kāruhiruhi (pied shag) and kawau (black shag). The award-winning adventure playground is themed on the classic Kiwi bach while there is a second playground with a giant tunnel slide. Take togs for the whole family during summer and have a dip in the Tōtara Park Pool at the end of your walk or run.
