Keep moving, Auckland

Published: 8 April 2020

Keeping active is an essential part of looking after our physical and mental wellbeing – perhaps even more so during COVID-19.

And even though we are all restricted in where we can go and how we can exercise, there are still lots of ways we can get our bodies moving.

Here are some ideas for how to get started:

Try a home workout

Staying at home doesn't have to mean cutting back on your exercise. On the Auckland Council Pools and Leisure Facebook page, we’ll be posting regular videos with home workouts for you and your whānau.

Auckland Council Fitness Lead Ritua Ali’iva’a says, “Establishing a regular workout regime during the lockdown will help combat stress and create a sense of routine.

“It is recommended that adults do at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise five days per week and 60 minutes every day for children.”

Workouts for the whole family

Fitting in exercise can be tough, especially when you have kids. But working out together as a family is a great way to get everyone moving and motivated to exercise.

Ritua Ali’iva’a recommends, “Regular exercise together as a family is a great way to encourage kids to develop healthy lifestyle habits.

And let’s not forget our older whanau, our amazing instructors from Auckland Council Pools and Leisure have put together some great routines for seniors to help with balance and work the whole body.

All our videos can be found on Facebook page and our website. There’s new content coming all the time so keep checking back in.

Explore your local park

Explore your local park. During COVID-19, Aucklanders are permitted to visit a park for both exercise and wellbeing, provided it is local to your home and you observe physical distancing of 2m from other people at all times

Keeping it local and exercising in our neighbourhood is a good way to look after ourselves while keeping our whānau and our community safe.

With over 4000 parks and more than 250 paths to explore, there's something within walking distance of home wherever you are in Tāmaki Makaurau.
