Liston College, St Dominics College and Henderson North Primary School children will soon be able to get to school safer thanks to funding from Henderson-Massey Local Board.
As part of the Henderson North Home and School Zone project, the board has agreed to allocate $331,000 toward making Pinedale Place, Fairdene Avenue and Edwards Avenue safer.
The roads are used as routes to the three schools and will be made safer using traffic calming measures such as traffic islands, crossings and cycling paths.
Funding
The funding came from the board’s Transport Capital Fund, from which the board also allocated just over $18,000 for the design of the remaining roads in the zone.
Board Chair Chris Carter says that making roads safer for children to use is important.
“One of the main drivers behind the home and school zone was to provide schoolchildren in the area with a safe route to school.
“The roads that are to be improved are currently used as a 'rat run' route to avoid busy major roads. Making these roads safer will have high benefits for both safety improvements and amenity value, by reducing traffic volumes in what are mainly residential streets.
“The board was delighted to be able to allocate the funding to this section of the project, which we know will have a tangible effect in the area and make it more appealing for children to walk or cycle to school.
“We were also keen to acknowledge that there is more work to do in this area, and allocating the remainder of our funding for design of the remaining roads in the zone underlines our determination for this to be a project that really delivers on its intent.”
This section of the project will be delivered in 2020/2021.
