The Maungawhau subdivision

Albert-Eden Local Board is split into two subdivisions:

  • the Ōwairaka subdivision, which covers the suburbs of Waterview, Point Chevalier, Mount Albert, Morningside, Sandringham and Ōwairaka
  • the Maungawhau subdivision, which includes the suburbs of Kingsland, Balmoral, Epsom, Mt Eden, Greenlane and part of One Tree Hill.

Local board subdivisions serve the same purpose for electing local board members as do wards for electing councillors. The subdivisions inside a local board area are designed to provide effective representation of communities of interest. Electors within each subdivision elect a certain number of members to sit on the local board.

In the case of Albert-Eden Local Board, four members are elected from the Ōwairaka subdivision and four members are elected from the Maungawhau subdivision.

Benjamin Lee, the member who resigned and whose seat now needs to be filled in this by-election, was elected from the Maungawhau subdivision. This by-election is therefore only open to electors in this subdivision.

When we hold by-elections

A by-election is held to fill an elected position that has become vacant.

For example, if a governing body or a local board member resigns, before their term ends, and more than 12 months before the next three-yearly local election, a by-election will be held within the relevant ward or local board area to replace that member.

Get in your nomination in time

Submit your nomination early. Leaving it to the last minute will mean that if there is a problem with your nomination, there won’t be time to fix it before the deadline.
