A project is in the works that will provide a road map for Waiheke to become a low carbon community.

Auckland Council is hosting a hui next week which will bring together local organisations and community members that are working towards a transition to a carbon-neutral future. The objective of the hui is to co-create a Climate Action Plan for Waiheke.

Liz Ross, Auckland Council Low Carbon Specialist, says the project will help to achieve Waiheke Local Board’s objective of supporting community-led programmes that achieve sustainable and low-carbon behaviour change and self-sufficiency.

“It will bring together and amplify work that’s already underway within the community, and aims to identify gaps and opportunities for new local projects that align with Auckland’s Climate Plan Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri.

“During the hui, we want to draw together local community action in the areas of EAT (food waste reduction, local food production, eating plant-based meals), MOVE (sustainable transport and EV’s), ENERGY (energy-efficient, electric homes), GROW (carbon sequestration), SHOP (local circular economy), and TALK (climate advocacy).

“Next week’s hui will be vitally important in the development of Waiheke’s Climate Action Plan. We encourage anyone in the community involved or interested in climate change action, to register their interest in attending,” says Liz Ross.

Waiheke Local Board will be the fifth local board to develop a local climate action plan, joining Waitematā, Whau, Puketāpapa and Henderson-Massey local boards.
