The Dominion Road Business Association recently received a Purple Flag accreditation, an international endorsement for providing Aucklanders with a safe nighttime experience.

The accolade has been won under the aegis of the well-established Dominion Road Business Association. This project was funded by Albert-Eden Local Board.

Albert-Eden’s business associations are supported by Albert-Eden Local Board to provide stimulus to the local economy.

“I’m very pleased that Dominion Road’s businesses have received this recognition. It is a wonderful precinct and offers variety, value and a good time to visitors,” says Albert-Eden Local Board Deputy Chair and Dominion Rd Association representative, Lee Corrick.

A high score on criteria like safety, diversity, and a proactive approach to the management of nightlife set the area apart and came as no surprise.

This accreditation is a welcome acknowledgement of everything that Deputy Chair Corrick and locals have always known about the locality.

Purple Flag was launched in the UK in 2009 by the ACTM (Association of Town and City Management) as a robust accreditation with annual assessments. Today, over 100 destinations have been awarded it across Europe and the United Kingdom.

The Dominion Road precinct is the first destination in the Southern hemisphere to achieve Purple Flag status. Its accreditation process started in October 2019 and was successfully completed in February 2021.

Dominion Road Business Association Manager Gary Holmes says he is thrilled with the outcome and says that having Purple Flag accreditation will further help Dominion Road achieve its vision of being a ‘World within a street’.

“We are looking forward to working collaboratively to continue to improve our night-time economy, increase safety in the town centre at night and help put more money into the back pocket of our local businesses," says Holmes.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, local businesses have faced challenges. Many have had to adapt and find creative ways to survive.

“Albert-Eden’s four Business Improvement Districts have done a fabulous job of supporting businesses in tough times by encouraging people to buy locally,” says Deputy Chair Corrick.

“As a local board, we will continue to do everything we can to build vibrant town centres and a thriving local economy.”
