Work at two west coast beach car parks will increase safety and improve facilities, while repair work on the Titirangi War Memorial park wall will happen in the coming weeks.

The car parks at the Western Huia Domain and Armour Bay Reserve will be closed during the works, which will begin in late June.

Significant drainage improvements will be incorporated into the maintenance, reducing the erosion of gravel on-site, and will also see speed humps at Armour Bay being replaced, new gravel being laid and other features to make both carparks safer.

Carparking at Huia Domain East remains available as an alternative for the three weeks Huia Domain West closure, but vehicle access will not be available at Armour Bay for just over a month.

Titirangi War Memorial Park wall

In Titirangi, repair work on the Titirangi War Memorial Park wall from 21 June to 16 July (weather dependant) will involve removing the existing stone wall and replacing it with a new retaining wall.

A stonemason will reuse the original stones where possible to create a stone facing on the wall – this will ensure that it visually looks the same but is structurally sound. There will be around five car parking spots reserved for workers during the period.

Winter scheduling

Waitākere Ranges Local Board Chair, Saffron Toms says that while it will be inconvenient to have the car parks unavailable, scheduling during winter should lessen the impact.

“While we know that there is a level of inconvenience closing the car parks during the work, the final outcome will be worthwhile. In general, the winter months are a good time to carry out this type of work as fewer people are using the carparks.

“Both the carparks need the maintenance work and I’m especially pleased that drainage issues are being addressed. It’s important for the longer-term sustainability of the carparks that this happens so we just ask for patience and understanding while the work is carried out.

“It’s also good to see the council doing all it can to preserve the heritage in Titirangi and re-using stones from the original wall where possible. I look forward to it being finished.”
