Guest conductor New Zealander Tianyi Lu, who in 2020 won first prize at both the Sir Georg Solti International Conductors’ Competition in Germany, as well as the Guido Cantelli International Conducting Competition in Italy, will lead the MSO in this colourful programme.

We very much look forward to welcoming her return in our 2022 season.

She has chosen some of her favourite excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s magical Swan Lake ballet to commence this wonderful concert.

Percussionist, Rachel Thomas, will introduce us to Eric Ewazen’s Concerto for Marimba and Strings.

Written for the virtuoso She-E Wu, this work is considered one of the flagships of the marimba repertoire, as well as one of the most popular concertos played by percussionists.

It is one of the most beautiful pieces written for the instrument, composed in Ewazen’s neoromantic harmonic language.

Rachel brings her own five-octave marimba to Manukau to perform this exhilarating work.

Rimsky-Korsakov is a captivating magician in his mastery of the orchestra’s capabilities and his Scheherazade is a dazzling example of this.

Oriental in flavour and dominated by the characters of the Sultan and the beautiful Scheherazade, the work tells their tender love story and paints fairy-tale pictures of an oriental bazaar and a whirling festival. Great power is overcome by beauty and love.
