COMING FULL CIRCLE is a Centenary tribute exhibition to acclaimed ex-pat painter Douglas MacDiarmid. Born in Taihape, he lived and worked for over 50 years in Paris where he died in 2020, aged 97. MacDiarmid attributed his success to the landscapes and influences of his beginnings: “You cannot, snakelike, shed your skin,” he said, no matter how hard he might have tried when young and flighty.
Douglas’s father was a well-known doctor in Takapuna, and the family holidayed in Piha where they had a bach. Douglas often visited from his home in Paris, and he held 40 exhibitions in Aotearoa. Enjoy a glimpse into the life and times of this charismatic artist through paintings, photographs and personal memorabilia on display in the Angela Morton Room Te Pātaka Toi Art Library.
Please join us, too, for the launch of MacDiarmid’s LETTERS TO LILBURN – a selection of letters and poems he wrote to his first love, composer Douglas Lilburn, with whom he shared a lifelong correspondence.
