In late 2017, Tāmaki Makaurau was designated a UNESCO City of Music within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, supported by the Prime Minister, the Mayor, the city’s Governing Body, and a vast array of music stakeholders.
The designation acknowledged the rich musical history of the region and the commitment to strengthening all aspects of music culturally, institutionally and from an industry standpoint.
The City of Music status provides a mechanism for local government and the music sector to work together to solve challenges and maximize opportunities for the region’s music industry and culture.
