Exploring Sacred Spaces: Sri Radha Krishna Mandir

Heritage Festival Placeholder Tile 462X362px

Established in 1921, the Auckland Indian Association formed when Indians came together as a community in Aotearoa after having travelled by sea from India through Australia and the Pacific Islands. More than 40 years earlier, the British took Indians to Fiji to work as labourers on sugar plantations, and the resulting generations adapted many of their traditions to their Pacific home.

Over the years, thousands of Fijian Indians moved to New Zealand, where they are active within their religious communities. Built in 2001, the Sri Radha Krishna Mandir (Temple) brings Indians, Fijian Indians, and other Hindus together, offering a sacred space that is a home away from home for many migrants. The Auckland Inter-Faith Council (AIFC) hosts this event which includes a guided tour through the temple. All are welcome and your questions are welcome too – see you there!
