Many Aucklanders have walked past this cemetery, a green oasis established in the 1840s, but how many of us have walked inside?
Children and families are invited for a special guided walk to explore this historic sacred place. The east side of the cemetery is Anglican, Wesleyan and general burials. The west side is Jewish, Presbyterian and Catholic.
We talk about the religions that have a burial ground here – but what about Māori and other ethnicities, where were they buried? The kids’ trail map provided will help you find monuments that have survived over 170 years! And what about the early settlers who couldn’t afford an expensive headstone, how do we remember them? This tour, aimed at children and families, is facilitated by Lynda Lucas.
