Transportation to the colonies became a common punishment in 18th century Britain, sometimes for the lowly crime of poaching game.
Using songs and transcripts from court trials, folk duo Celtic Ferret, aka Jean Reid & Ian Bartlett, will explore the practices of pre 20th century poachers and their interactions with their community – and with gamekeepers of course! Scripts and a well-stocked props box will ensure those at the workshop can let loose their inner actor, recreating a courtroom scene or two from history.
If you have convict ancestry or are a folk music fan, this event is for you! Later in the day, the library is also hosting a follow-on event ‘Researching Convict Ancestry’ from 1-2pm. This event was made possible by collaboration between Titirangi Library and Lopdell Precinct.
