All the reasons to stand in Auckland's elections

Publish Date : 07 May 2025

Still not sure about whether to stand for Auckland Council and be the voice for your community? What about getting paid to take up one of Auckland’s most rewarding jobs and making a difference for you, your whānau and community?

Information sessions are being held weekly in May across 24 libraries in Tāmaki Makaurau to help inform Aucklanders everything there is to know about being a candidate in Auckland Local Elections 2025 and what happens if you’re elected.

With elections taking place in October, prospective candidates will need to decide whether they intend to stand soon. Nominations open on Friday 4 July and close on Friday 1 August at midday.

General Manager of Auckland Council’s Governance and Engagement, Lou-Ann Ballantyne invites anyone considering the idea to drop in for a chat.

“Aucklanders are encouraged to pop in and ask our experts any burning questions about standing for council and what’s involved once elected,” Ms Ballantyne says.

“We’ll have council staff who work closely with elected members on stand-by to provide guidance on the nomination process for candidates. They’ll also advise on the roles and responsibilities of elected members through one-on-one conversations for those who are curious, still on the fence or who just need a few more details to iron out their campaign,” she says.

“There are numerous upcoming opportunities and decisions to be made by the council and our local boards, to help Tāmaki Makaurau continue to grow and thrive, and we’ll need newly elected members to take on those responsibilities.

“Elected members have played a huge part in Auckland’s journey so far and there’s plenty more work to do for our next cohort of leaders.”

“No doubt it’s a big career and lifestyle decision for people to make – however the potential outcomes are hugely beneficial for those elected and their community. Just remember, you have to be in to win.”
