Rodney Local Board has approved a new pedestrian and cycle path that will link key Warkworth destinations.

The route located on public land will connect the Warkworth Showgrounds, the old Atlas site earmarked for a Park and Ride facility, Kowhai Park and the Melwood subdivision. It replaces the suspension bridge option which, while a more direct route, crosses private land and wasn’t supported by the landowners.

Rodney Local Board Chair Beth Houlbrooke says the new route will provide safe pedestrian and cycle access from Warkworth through two reserves and away from SH1.

“The route opens up fantastic opportunities for recreation, fitness and commuting. It’s going to be an incredible community asset coupled with the upgraded Kowhai Park and the soon to be developed park and ride facility funded by the Rodney Transport Targeted Rate.”

Next steps are for council staff to develop the path concept and gather feedback from the local community, sports and other groups, prior to progressing to design stage which has ready-to-build plans with cost estimates.

More details can be found in the Warkworth Showgrounds to Kowhai Park Reserve walkway on the council website.
