Auckland’s rainbow community is getting ready to party and everyone is invited.
Held from 1 February to 16 February, Auckland Pride Festival 2020 is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever with a large line-up of events happening throughout the city.
Joining the celebrations, Auckland Council is transforming its arts, community and event venues into Proud Centres offering all-inclusive and free events celebrating the city’s LGBTQI+ communities.
“All the activities taking place at our Proud Centres focus on education, acceptance and celebration of our unique mix of cultures, sexualities and gender identities,” Councillor Richard Hills says.
Councillor Hills, who will be taking part in many of the events and activities, encourages Aucklanders to show their support for the rainbow community.
“We’ve come so far as a city but there still more work to do, especially for our transgender and gender diverse communities and many young people who may be still figuring out who they are, so getting out and supporting the festival, and our rainbow community, is one way we can help.”
The festival calendar is jam-packed with more than 155 events and activities, including everything from theatre to comedy, cabaret to pageants and even sports contests.
“I want to congratulate the Auckland Pride Festival team and our Proud Centres team for putting together the biggest pride ever and ensuring so many community-focused activities are free, more accessible and family-friendly so everyone can get out and enjoy the fun.
“There’s something for everyone.”
While Councillor Hills admits he’ll give the table tennis and dodgeball a miss, he’s especially looking forward to attending the Auckland Pride Gala, Our March, Our Party and other community events.
He says council-supported activities have been made possible from funding through contestable regional events grants, local boards, Heart of the City, city centre targeted rate and sponsors.
“This is a truly collaborative event that is helping to make our city more welcoming and more exciting.”
