A strategic overview for future shade options in the many parks in the Henderson-Massey Local Board area has been agreed.
The Henderson-Massey Shade and Shelter Provision Assessment looks at the existing and future provision through the local board area and will guide decisions on where to invest in shade as well as identifying new opportunities.
It maps and analyses current shade, developed principles for provision and design and identifies opportunities for shade and shelter in the future, with options for permanent shade, shade sails and tree cover provided.
Recommendations
Key recommendations include permanent shelters for the picnic area at Harbourview-Orangihina, and for the BBQ area at Tui Glen Reserve.
Shade sail options are recommended at Glendene Reserve, Henderson Valley Park, Moire Park, Starling Park, Taipari Strand and Triangle Park, while tree shade (through planting) is recommended at a number of reserves across the network of play spaces.
Informing strategy
Henderson-Massey Local Board Chair, Vanessa Neeson says that the assessment will provide guidance for the board going forward.
“While the board has not committed to any funds to improve shade provision at this time, it is an important piece of work that will help to inform our strategy going forward.
“One of the things identified in the assessment was that there has been an inconsistent approach to shade applied across our parks, which is now able to be addressed, funding permitting.
“Having this assessment means that in future we can apply shade consistently across the area, and while tree shade is the preferred form of shade, recommendations for permanent structures for the areas in Harbourview-Orangihina and Tui Glen make sense and are not out of reach from a financial perspective.
“One of the messages we consistently hear from each community is around shade provision at playspaces. We know it is important and is why we commissioned this assessment, so that we can provide each area with appropriate shade provision where possible and funding permitting in the future.”
