Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) for 2021.

While COVID-19 has had a big impact on plans for this year, Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland Council) still has some great ways for you to be involved and strengthen your reo (language).

“Our Māori identity is Tāmaki Makaurau’s point of difference in the world – it advances prosperity for Māori and benefits all Aucklanders. Hearing te reo Māori being spoken across our mainstream media is such an encouragement and shows that it’s becoming such an important part in our lives here in Tāmaki Makaurau,” says Councillor Alf Filipaina, Chair of Auckland Council’s Parks, Arts, Community and Events Committee.

“Although we are still in lockdown, there are plenty of ways that we can grow in our knowledge and practice of te reo Māori. I encourage everyone to try at least one of the offerings suggested below this coming week and on into the rest of September.”

Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori (The Māori Language Moment)

Te Wā Tuku Reo Māori is happening at midday on Tūrei, 14 o Mahuru (Tuesday 14 September).

Hosted by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (The Māori Language Commission), this is a great opportunity for Aucklanders of all ages to join a million other New Zealanders across Aotearoa to celebrate te reo at the same time.

There are plenty of opportunities to participate, from speaking, reading, singing, texting, emailing, writing, learning or listening to te reo Māori.

Why not think about what you can do in your bubble, then sign up and take part. Challenge your friends, colleagues and whānau to do the same.

Nau Mai – Place Names videos

Getting reo Māori pronunciation right can be a challenge.

Over the course of the week a series of videos will be re-released. They will introduce you to place names in Tāmaki Makaurau using correct pronunciation.

Check them out on the Auckland Council YouTube channel, Facebook page or Instagram and hear some well-known Aucklanders talk about places that are important to them. Just look for #ReoMaoriAKL.

Mahuru Māori with Auckland Council Libraries

Mahuru Māori puts the spotlight on te reo Māori by using it in everyday situations. The challenge is to consciously use as much te reo Māori as possible throughout the whole month of September. Regardless of level, we all know some te reo Māori, so the push is for us all to learn a bit more.

While physical libraries are closed in Alert Level 4, there is plenty to explore from home. Visit the Mahuru Māori webpage on the libraries website to discover what is available for yourself and your family.

Aucklanders are also encouraged to view the region’s heritage collections in Kura to get an understanding of how te reo Māori has changed and evolved. The collections hold taonga tuku iho (heirlooms) and include some of the earliest written examples of te reo Māori in the country.

Learn the environments that make up Tāmaki Makaurau parks

The Auckland Council Parks Services team is helping Aucklanders learn relevant reo for some of Auckland’s environments. They are doing that using online videos on the Auckland Council Parks Facebook page. Join rangers as they explore the ngahere (forest) and pāmu (farm).

With so much on offer from Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, make 2021 the year you joined the growing reo Māori movement and built your up confidence to use the reo every day.
