SouthSci is now accepting funding applications for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related community research projects in 2022.

South Auckland schools, universities, community and iwi groups are encouraged to apply for up to $20,000 in funding. Applications are open now until 15 April.

As part of the New Zealand Government’s Curious Minds initiative, SouthSci aims to show young people the value of science skills and to highlight career pathways. They do this through funding innovative research projects, driven by schools and communities and completed in collaboration with local STEM businesses, scientists and engineers.

SouthSci Project Manager Ying Yang says tapping into interests and concerns that resonate with young people is key to engaging them in STEM. “Science learning is most effective when it’s relevant and purpose-driven. In recent years, there has been a real increase in community research centred around our health and wellbeing, environment, and indigenous sciences and mātauranga. This is very exciting, and I can’t wait to support more research projects in 2022.”

Previous examples of projects funded by SouthSci have included Accelerating Aotearoa (a Ōtara-based community group) investigating water quality in their local awa, East Tamaki School students designing new moth traps to protect their school orchard, and Rosehill College students researching the nutrition, sustainability and affordability of their canteen menu.

Yang says the project teams are a collaboration between young people, community partners and scientists from universities and STEM organisations. “These collaborations enable a sharing of expertise, knowledge and resources that our groups may not otherwise have had access to.”

There are a set of criteria for applications: the project must (a) have community relevance and participation; (b) tackle a substantive scientific question in active partnership with a STEM partner(s); and (c) offer educational value for everyone involved.

For the best chance at designing a successful application, please contact Ying Yang on 021 195 4923; email STEM@cometauckland.org.nz or visit the SouthSci website.

SouthSci is an initiative of COMET Auckland – Te Hononga Akoranga and Curious Minds - He Whenua Hihiri i te Mahara.
