The smiles of excited children were a feature of a celebration to mark the opening of a new playground at Massey’s Moire Park.

The ‘discovery playground / Papa Rēhia o Tūhura' quickly lived up to its name as families uncovered tio (oysters) and tuna in a sandpit hidden near the end of the tunnel, while tamariki tested the bounce of inground trampolines, balanced balls and made the most of basket swings and talking tubes.

Designed in partnership with iwi Te Kawarau a Maki the playground will be a welcome addition to Massey, one of Auckland’s fastest growing areas, Henderson-Massey Local Board Chair Chris Carter says.

“The playground offers a place for families to enjoy leisure time in their own neighbourhood, which is so important for any community’s well-being," he says.

“It was a fantastic turnout and that show just how well this asset will be used by everyone in the future.

“It’s a place for the whole family, older kids can throw a ball at the basketball court, there are barbecue facilities and there’s plenty of on and off-road parking at Granville Road.”

The formal blessing was followed by garden games, a sausage sizzle and ice cream.
