A new plan is set to empower the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu community to better prepare for and respond to emergencies.

The Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board Emergency Readiness and Response Plan, created with Auckland Emergency Management (AEM), offers practical guidance to help residents and businesses stay safe before, during, and after an emergency.

The plan responds to lessons learned from the devastating Auckland floods and Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023, which highlighted the importance of local preparedness and community support during emergency events.

Board chair Tauanu’u Nick Bakulich says, “We understand what it's like to face the challenges of an emergency, and time and again, our community has come together to support one another. This plan goes beyond the basics, outlining specific roles for everyone, including the care of our furry friends, key contacts, how to stay informed, what to do in an emergency, and where to go. It’s a comprehensive guide that covers everything you need to know for any type of natural disaster. In times of crisis, it’s often our neighbours who step up first, and this plan ensures we’re all prepared and aware of how we can help.”

It identifies the area’s top hazards and provides tips on reducing risk, preparing for emergencies, and navigating the recovery process.

Developed through consultation with diverse community and faith-based groups, subject matter experts, and key agencies, the plan is designed to reflect the unique needs of the 78,642 residents in mind.

Printed copies will be available in libraries and community centres, while a digital version will soon be accessible on the council website.

Bakulich adds, “Being prepared means having a plan in place that helps us respond quickly and effectively to an emergency. It is important that we understand our responsibilities while supporting each other through it all.”

The Local Board Emergency Readiness and Response Plan provides information and advice for people living and working in the local area to get ready for and respond to an emergency. It provides clarity on the roles and responsibilities of Auckland Emergency Management, Auckland Council, the local board, individuals and communities across the four Rs of emergency management: reduction, readiness, response and recovery.
