The purpose of our art is to support minds in seeking and learning about each others’ culture, history, stories, and how we all connect, migrated, and whakapapa to Aotearoa New Zealand.
Kalia ‘o Maui Tikitiki A-Taranga is a carving of Māui Tikitiki A-Taranga, the Māori demigod, standing on a Tongan Kalia, a large double hull canoe. Māui is pulling up a stingray, representing Te Ika-A-Māui, the North Island. Māui’s fishing rope is a red, hand woven sennit to represent Papakura.
This creation provides a visually beautiful and interesting way for all ages and communities to learn about our diverse and shared cultures in Aotearoa.
