Matariki Themed Scavenger Hunt

Come along anytime during the school holidays for a fun scavenger hunt.

Saturday 4 July 2026, 2pm - 3pm | Kahoot and Chinese Snack

Put your Chinese Language Week knowledge to the test with our Kahoot quiz, then enjoy a delicious Chinese snack!

Sunday 5 July 2026, 2pm - 3pm | Chinese Calligraphy Workshop

Discover the art of Chinese calligraphy and learn to write using a traditional calligraphy set!

Monday 6 July, 2pm - 5pm | Tukutuku Toi Workshop 

Weaving remembrance tukutuku workshop - honouring our tūpuna and reflecting on the past through tukutuku design. 

Learn the meaning behind patterns like Purapurawhetu (scattered stars). Weave your very own star-themed panel - a lasting keepsake for you to take home.

*Limited space. Registration required. Designed for ages 14 - 99.

Tuesday 7 July, 2pm - 3pm | Poi Making

Join us for a fun, hands-on poi making workshops where you will create your own poi while learning about its cultural significance to Te Ao Māori. Once completed, everyone can take their creations home!

*Limited space. Registration required. Great for all ages! 

Wednesday 8 July, 2pm - 3pm | Paper Korowai Making

Korowai are treasured woven cloaks representing strength, whānau and protection. Join us to learn how a traditional cloak can be made. 

*Limited space. Registration required. Children will need to be supervised by parent/guardian. 

Thursday 9 July, 2pm - 3pm | Weaving Cards

Celebrate Matariki by learning a basic weaving technique and create your own weaving card to take home!  

Friday 10 July, 2pm - 3pm | Poi Lesson

Poi are special Māori treasures that bring light, movement and joy!

Come along to learn some traditional moves for you to add to your kete! We have 15 poi available to share or you’re welcome to bring your own.

Saturday 11 July, 10.30am - 12pm | Robogals Workshop

Curious about STEM?

Come and learn about a catapults, mechanics and bynamics! We’ll also cover stored energy, design strategies and projectile motion.

Recommended for ages 5-10, but all tamariki welcome to learn!

Monday 13 July, 2pm - 3pm | Matariki Story and Craft

Come and hear the story of how Matariki came to be, followed by a star craft. Take it home or display it at the library!

Tuesday 14 July, 2pm - 3pm | Matariki Escape Room

Help us unlock the stars of Matariki by completing each activity and welcome the Māori New Year!

For ages 8 years and older.

Wednesday 15 July, 2pm - 3pm | Paper Whare Making

This activity is all based on Sir Mason Durie's Whare Tapa Whā model and keeping this actionable. It's a great follow on from Sparklers Tuputupu activity.

Thursday 16 July, 2pm - 3pm | Constellation Projector and Skyview Lite

Skyview Lite brings stargazing to everyone! An amazing app that uses augmented reality to see stars, planets and satellites. 

Friday 17 July, 2pm - 3pm | My Waitā

Create your own underwater scene!

Fill it with fish, seaweed and shells. Celebrate life and wonder of the seas during this Matariki season. Fun for all ages!

Saturday 18 July, 2pm - 3pm | Wishing Star

Woven like a net, it represents safe voyage, plentiful fish and the way our ancestors followed the stars to provide for their whānau. 

Sunday 19 July, 2pm - 3pm | Ngārara Bookmarks

The keeper of all our hopes and dreams. Make your own colorful bug bookmark to be your very own 'wishing keeper'.
