Celebrate the beauty, tradition and storytelling of Cook Islands tivaevae at Papatoetoe Museum’s newest exhibition, Threads of the Cook Islands.
Featuring the work of the Polynesian Creative Arts Mamas and internationally renowned tivaevae artist Tukua Turia, this colourful exhibition showcases handcrafted textile art that has been passed down through generations of Cook Islands families. Visitors will discover the history, cultural significance and artistry behind tivaevae while enjoying a stunning display of large scale works throughout the museum.
Everyone is welcome to attend the exhibition opening on Thursday 30 July from 11.30am to 12.30pm, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet members of the Polynesian Creative Arts Mamas and celebrate the official launch of the exhibition.
The exhibition remains on display until Sunday 16 August 2026 during normal museum opening hours.
On Saturday 15 August, from 1pm to 4pm, visitors are invited to return for a special afternoon of demonstrations and activities. Members of the Polynesian Creative Arts Mamas will demonstrate traditional tivaevae techniques, share the stories behind their work and answer questions about this treasured Cook Islands art form.
This free exhibition is suitable for all ages and offers a unique opportunity to experience Pacific culture, creativity and community through one of the Cook Islands’ most treasured artistic traditions.
