Before the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in 1959, Birkenhead and the surrounding districts served as a 'fruit bowl' of the region.
The fertile hillsides were blanketed in orchards and strawberry fields, tended by hardworking local families and horticultural pioneers. On this one-hour guided walk through the Glenfield-Birkenhead cemetery, Matt Elliott brings the history of these early growers to life. Please note that this event is weather permitting.
