Spend a day in Warkworth

Just a 45-minute drive from central Auckland, the Warkworth region is the perfect destination for a day trip. With the beautiful Mahurangi River lapping at the town’s edge and stunning regional parks on its doorstep, Warkworth’s relaxed country atmosphere feels a world away from the busy city bustle.

Warkworth’s charming historic village is dotted with heritage buildings and boutique shops. Enjoy a spot of shopping, browse the local galleries and grab a bite to eat from one of the great cafes.

Just a short walk from the shopping centre is the Mahurangi River, a popular spot for picnickers and home to a variety of gorgeous steel sculptures of native birds by Warkworth artist Ruby Watson.

Another great picnic spot is the old Warkworth Cement Works, a heritage site that offers the chance to step back in time. Explore the picturesque ruins and, on a hot day, cool off in the deep lake which was once a quarry.

If you’re visiting Warkworth on a Saturday morning, be sure to take a 10-minute drive to the Matakana Farmers’ Market, where you’ll find a divine range of artisan goodies, crafts and entertainment.

Twenty minutes from Matakana is the marine reserve of Goat Island, a perfect spot for snorkelling, diving or just enjoying a pre-summer paddle in the sheltered, clear waters.
