Kaimataara o Wai Manawa opens in Birkenhead

An exciting split-level public space in the heart of Birkenhead is ready to be opened in September.

From a new viewing platform, visitors can take in panoramic views across Le Roys Bush, the city, harbour and gulf islands. There will also be a new cafe, which is expected to open later this year.

The destination has been named Kaimataara ō Wai Manawa – a name gifted to the community by mana whenua.

The surrounding area in its entirety was known to Māori as Wai Manawa. ‘Wai manawa’ means ‘source ofthe water’, and refers to the basin nature of the Le Roys Bush area.

Kaimataara ō Wai Manawa means ‘place enabling people to watch over Wai Manawa’.

Kaipātiki Local Board invites you to the official opening of this space.

Enjoy the new lookout, and learn more about its name and the design.
