Planning the future of urban transport

Last Updated : 31 Jan 2017

A transport plan to support major growth areas in the north, north-west and south of the region has been completed.

The plan, Supporting Growth – Delivering Transport Networks, is needed to meet the scale of growth expected in new urban areas over the next 30 years.

It will help achieve some of the goals in the Auckland Transport Alignment Project, a collaboration between the council and the government to invest in the city’s transport infrastructure.

Councillor Chris Darby, who chairs the council’s planning committee, says the Supporting Growth plan was prepared with input from local boards, mana whenua and communities, and is a fine example of stakeholders working together to solve transport challenges.

“This is a major step forward in transport planning,” he says.

“It covers options for public transport, local and state highway networks, and walking and cycling improvements, which are now being prioritised for funding.”
