Auckland Council kicks off Value for Money Review

Publish Date : 23 Jun 2017

The Auckland Council Group Value for Money Review (VFM) is underway.

The review comes in the wake of the amendment of the Local Government Act in 2014.

The government amended the legislation at the time to include ‘Section 17A - Delivery of Services’.

Section 17A requires all local authorities, including Auckland Council, to review the cost-effectiveness of their services.

Auckland Council Group Chief Financial Officer Sue Tindal says it was intended to get councils thinking about ways to encourage efficiency gains and it is also an opportunity to improve the delivery of services to residents and ratepayers.

“As a publicly funded organisation, we have a responsibility to ensure we’re spending money wisely,” says Sue Tindal.

The review covers the entire Auckland Council group, and the first stage of the review will cover the following services provided by the group:

  • Three Waters (stormwater, wastewater, water supply)
  • domestic waste
  • communication and engagement
  • investment attractions and global partnerships
