Two art projects supported by Auckland Council and Waitematā Local Board have won prizes at the national Best Design Awards.

Pop Poetry by Alt Group was awarded gold for Environmental Graphics in the Graphic category.

Pop Drop by Jasmax and Alt Group was awarded gold for Exhibition and Temporary Structures in the spatial category.

Art out of galleries

Both projects were part of the 2017 Pop programme, an annual series of temporary art projects that takes art out of galleries and theatres and into public spaces.

Pop Poetry brought inner-city urban sites to life at night through large-format, typographic projections penned by some of Auckland’s finest literary talent.

Pop Drop (at Karanga Plaza) was a giant water-filled blob that people could play with, step on, roll on or prod.

From the city centre to the suburbs

Pop has been delivered in central suburbs successfully for the past four years. For the past two years the itinerary has also included suburbs outside the city centre: Takapuna, Onehunga, Māngere and New Lynn – with an average of around 4000 people taking part each week across the region during the April to June season.

Pop aligns with the Auckland Plan objective to integrate arts and culture into our everyday lives by taking creative endeavours into open public spaces.

The Pop concept and design was created by Alt Group and is funded and supported by Waitematā Local Board and Auckland Council.
