Auckland Council’s Stanmore Bay Pool and Leisure Centre has been awarded the prestigious Supreme Club of the Year and Chain/Group Facility of the Year at the annual New Zealand Exercise Industry Awards.

The Awards have been running since 2005 and recognise excellence in New Zealand’s exercise industry.

Stanmore Bay Pool and Leisure Centre Manager Matt Burden says the awards are fantastic recognition for the leisure staff and its members.

“We have worked extremely hard as a team and to come away with these two awards is such a fantastic achievement,” he says.

“We pride ourselves on being more than just a gym. We’re very much a hub for community sport and recreation in Whangaparāoa and aim to cater for everyone, no matter their age or ability.”

The judges commented on the range and quality of services, the dedication of staff and the inclusive culture as reasons why the centre was a stand out in this year’s awards.

The good news kept coming with Lis MacLeod, a group fitness instructor at the Stanmore Bay Pool and Leisure Centre, taking out the Group Exercise – Own Choreography Instructor of the Year and People’s Choice awards.

Lis, who has contracted to the leisure centre for seven years, instructs a number of group fitness classes.

“I was overwhelmed and felt really honoured to have won these awards. This is a national competition, so being named a finalist is a big deal let alone winning,” Lis says.

“I was up against some really talented people, so I didn’t think little old me would be in the running.

“When my name got read out I put my head in my hands and couldn’t get off my seat. I was truly overwhelmed and humbled with how the community had rallied together to support me.”

Helping Aucklanders get active

It’s been a busy year for the Stanmore Bay Pool and Leisure Centre, which was upgraded earlier this year. Improvements included an upgraded state-of-the-art fitness centre, new adult spa and sauna and a Kauri Kids childcare centre offering affordable, flexible childcare for young Aucklanders.

The centre upgrade was all about encouraging healthier and more active lifestyles and to meet the needs of the coast’s growing population.

A new customer-focused membership structure has also recently rolled out across Stanmore Bay and 15 other council-operated centres. It’s designed to provide tailored options for exercise preferences and is part of Auckland Council Pools and Leisure’s customer promise to help Aucklanders get active their way.

Members can choose from a Get into it membership offering access to multiple services and the ability to visit a number of centres or choose a Swim it, Gym it or Move it membership at a reduced price, which limits their membership to a preferred service at only one centre.

Centres are grouped into three tiers – Gold, Silver and Bronze – according to the range of services that they offer.
