Howick Local Board members were put to work at a special event to recognise the efforts of the area’s unsung heroes – its volunteers.

The elected members donned special aprons and acted as servers for the day to the more than 150 volunteers who attended the Howick Volunteer Recognition Awards event at Pakuranga Golf Club.

“It was our chance to say thank you for everything they do for our community,” says chair David Collings of the biennial event which attracted around 200 nominations.

“What’s really humbling when we do things like this is seeing the diversity of our community as well as the causes, projects and activities they are involved in – they really are at the heart of what makes this community tick.”

He says not only is volunteering good for the community it is also good for the economy.

“Nationally volunteers contribute $3.5 billion to the economy, representing 1.7 per cent of gross domestic product. And with our area making up one-tenth of Auckland, our volunteers are making a large contribution to the local economy.”
