New lease for Te Tuhi arts centre

Pakuranga’s celebrated Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts has been granted a new lease, securing its future at its Reeves Road site for another 20 years.

Howick Local Board granted the lease to the Contemporary Art Foundation, whose ground lease was due to expire next year.

Auckland Council staff told the board Te Tuhi was a well-established community arts organisation that had been providing art education programmes and exhibitions for more than 40 years.

The terms of the lease are $1 a year rent if requested for 10 years, with one right of renewal, taking Te Tuhi through to September 2039.

The Contemporary Art Foundation took over from the Pakuranga Arts and Cultural Trust, and its vision is to be a contemporary art organisation nationally and internationally renowned for its art, engagement and participation practices.

Between 2017 and 2018, Te Tuhi attracted about 175,000 visitors, including 5500 students, hosted 15 exhibitions featuring 20 artists and commissioned 11 new artworks. It also hosted more than 150 workshops and classes, and more than 30 seminars and lectures.
