Ladies Bay stairs in dire need of safety improvements

A new wide timber staircase to Ladies Bay St Heliers from Cliff Road has been constructed providing much safer pedestrian access to the Bay area.

A great deal of structural work was required to ensure safety and stability of the walkway which included constructing a retaining wall at the lower end of the stairs and lower landing. This additional work will help reduce the chance of landslip and will increase the lifespan of the stairs and pathway itself.

“As well as improving safety and access, this stairwell is now an attractive asset for the St Heliers community,” says Scott Milne, Chair of Orakei Local Board.

The wooden stairs and pathway are wider than the original access which follows best practice and standards.

“We expect this upgrade to increase the number of visitors to this lovely part of our coastline."

Work on this project began in September 2019 and was opened again to the public in December 2019.
