Ōrākei Basin is a picturesque lagoon - a volcanic crater that is widely known for water sports, its circuit walk and popular off-leash dog areas.

Works to enhance the area were undertaken in 2019 and now Ōrākei Local Board has allocated funding towards a community event with the aim to showcase the basin area and draw attention to it as a destination for a wide array of activities.

“Now that the upgrades are complete and the basin really is in great shape for the full enjoyment of the community, it’s time to celebrate and help the wider public appreciate what the Ōrākei Basin has to offer,” explains Ōrākei Local Board Chair Scott Milne.

A main draw to Orakei Basin is the 2.88km circuit walk, which is a great way to discover the area because it takes you along a mixed pathway, over boardwalks, bridges and grass tracks, past Auckland Water-ski Club, along the water’s edge below Upland Road and near the new and vibrant Ōrākei Bay Village.

“On Sunday 9 February the community will come together and explore activities, clubs and businesses which are connected to the basin.  Everyone is invited to come along and enjoy this day with us,” says Milne.

Activities at the Orakei Basin Community Day include water-skiing demonstrations, miniature yacht races, a free sausage sizzle, garden games, mask making, Kelly Tarltons Sealife interactive display, bicycle mechanic and much, much more.
