A new pair of sunnies, snowboarding at Snowplanet, stargazing for budding astronauts at Stardome; they’re among the prizes kids and families can earn this summer by reading books.

Enjoy Auckland Council Libraries’ new online reading programme, Summer Reading, Sorted on their new online platform, Beanstack.

Councillor Alf Filipaina, Chair of the Parks, Arts, Community and Events Committee, says: “It is exciting to see our libraries giving Aucklanders new reasons to pick up a book or go online and read.

“Sometimes our tamariki need a gentle nudge, especially in summer, so this programme is timely. I would love to see more families reading a laugh-out-loud book together on the couch at home or under a tree in the local park this summer,” he says.

The programme is aimed at helping Aucklanders read, relax and reset this summer.

There are two reading challenges to choose from: the Whānau challenge encourages families to read together, collect digital badges and earn prizes and the Just for Me challenge offers activities, reading recommendations and prizes to adults.

Whether you are reading books, graphic novels, magazines, eBooks or eAudiobooks, all forms of reading can be recorded on Beanstack. Readers become eligible for prize draws as they reach reading milestones or complete activities.

All 55 community libraries across the Auckland region have computers available to use at no cost and there is free Wi-Fi for those who bring a device with them. Staff will be on hand to help people register and get started.

Registrations open on 14 December 2020 and challenges are live from 5 January until 5 February 2021.
