Getting new information, robust discussion on local issues and meeting like-minded people are the top reasons why locals say they attend the monthly community forum hosted by Puketāpapa Local Board.
“The local board enjoys holding these community forums and sees them as a vital part of keeping up our connection with locals. We’re had lots of fascinating discussions over the years, on footpaths, park plans, freedom camping, volunteering, pest control and much more, and there’s always something to learn from listening,” says chair Julie Fairey.
The forums started over four years ago and were regularly held in-person, alternating between local the Wesley Community Centre or the YMCA on a Thursday evening each month.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, they have shifted online but have remained popular even in that format.
The monthly community forum hosted by the Puketāpapa Local Board was convened online during the COVID-19 pandemic. This went a long way in maintaining community connections and continuity.
Each forum features different themes and subject matter experts, as well as presentations from community groups.
A recent forum focused on housing development, which is why Puketāpapa resident Zoe Spinks attended.
“I found out about it online and through my friends who are involved in local government. I wanted to hear from Kainga Ora about the new developments going up in the Puketāpapa area,” she says.
Ms Spinks participates in community organizing around community issues, and advocates for more young people getting involved in local issues such as better water infrastructure. “It’s great to hear different opinions on local issues,” she says.
People can email puketapapalocalboard@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz the local board with their questions or topics of interest in advance too.
The next Puketāpapa Local Board forum is on Thursday, 2 June.
Follow the local board facebook page and get all the details.
This will be the last forum until after the local government elections on 8 October.
