This month, Auckland Council will ask for submissions on proposed changes to our city’s planning rulebook - the Auckland Unitary Plan.
Proposed Plan Change 78 responds to requirements in the government’s National Policy Statement on Urban Development 2020 and the Resource Management Act to:
- enable more height and development in the City Centre and at least six storey buildings within walking distance of the City Centre, Metropolitan Centres and Rapid Transit Stops
- incorporate medium density residential standards that enable three storey housing in most urban residential areas.
Proposed Plan Change 79 manages the impacts of development on Auckland’s transport network, require safer access for pedestrians, and accessible car parking for new developments. Also included are requirements for safe facilities for on-site loading and un-loading, catering for more bicycles and e-bikes and enabling on-site electric vehicle charging.
Proposed Plan Change 80 introduces new policies into the Regional Policy Statement of the Auckland Unitary Plan, including for climate resilience and qualifying matters, or the exemptions that can limit building heights and density in some areas.
All of this means big changes to how our city grows and to the rules for how people can choose to develop their property.
What’s a submission?
A submission is how you can get involved by giving your views and suggestions on all the changes to the Auckland Unitary Plan.
By making a submission, your views will be considered by an independent panel of experts when they make recommendations on the changes to our city’s planning rules. You can do this on the Auckland Council website from 18 August 2022 to 29 September 2022.
This is the most important opportunity you have, to be heard on what is ultimately decided about Auckland’s housing future and how our city grows.
Please visit aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/planchanges to view the public notices for these plan changes. From 18 August this webpage will have more information about the proposed plan changes and so will your local library or council service centre.
