Twenty-four local volunteers were recently honoured for their tremendous contribution to the community at Albert-Eden’s Volunteer Recognition Awards.

Board chair Margi Watson is grateful for volunteers and their dedication. “We know that work, life and school in Albert-Eden and across Tāmaki Makaurau has not been easy this year – but so many people have carried on volunteering and making it the best it can be.

“Thank you for your generosity, your time and your contributions to our wider community. From parks, local groups, protecting heritage to sports – there is a lot of incredible work to celebrate.”

The following volunteers and organisations were recognised by fellow community members and awarded for their hard mahi within four categories:

Environmental

Individuals, groups or organisations whose efforts in improving or protecting the environment go beyond what is expected to work towards our environmental goals:

  • Friends of Oakley Creek
  • Gina Hefferan
  • Jian Wen Xiao
One of three environmental volunteer award recipients Jian Wen Xiao was described by nominator Susan Li Kwan as a dedicated sewing volunteer at Epsom’s sewing repair café. "Sometimes she even takes leave on her paid part time job and comes to work for us as a volunteer.”

Sport and recreation

Individuals or organisations whose contribution to making their sport, activity, club or team success is a step up from what’s expected:

  • Breanna Gibson
  • Don Hook
  • Glenda Ann Lamb
  • Jodie Lamb
  • Megan Earley
  • Mt Albert Ramblers Softball Club
  • Tania Sampson

Seven volunteers received awards in the sport and recreation category. They included Tania Sampson who was acknowledged by Metro Softball Club for going above and beyond to champion players and to ensure they play regardless of financial implications.

“Above all, Tania was able to accomplish all this volunteer work whilst undergoing numerous treatments for cancer. She is a fantastic, strong-willed nominee who is very deserving of recognition for her volunteer work,” according to the club’s nomination.
