Whau residents can enjoy a live harp performance, cultural dances, and cuisine from different Asian countries at the upcoming New Lynn Moon Festival night market.

The festival will take place from 5pm to 8pm on Saturday, 30 September, at New Lynn Community Centre, featuring a diverse range of events and activities.

“Our local board is committed to events like this as it celebrates the cultures and histories of our diverse community,” says Whau Local Board chair Kay Thomas.

“I’d love to invite everyone to come along to the festival, have a bite of a mooncake and appreciate the beauty of the moon with their whānau and friends.

“The festival will have a fabulous selection of local sellers and craft stalls, so it’ll be a great opportunity to support local as well,” Kay adds.

Performances include the Chinese Dance "Tang yin" by the Colourful Arts Group, a dance performance by the Synergy Hannah Dance Group and a chorus by Voice of Fragrant Rhythm.

Harpist Harrison Chou will be performing live to close out the festival.

Food-wise, no Moon Festival can go ahead without mooncakes. There’ll be vegetarian mooncakes at the night market baked by Xin He Vegetarian. The Donut Waka will be on-site and if you are an Asian food lover, you’ll be thrilled to indulge in the delicious Thai street food, or hot food inspired by the traditional Izakaya bars in Japan.

Arts and crafts stalls include 532 vintage items, featuring vintage clothing from all over the world, handmade produce bags from Shop Full of Cuddles and handmade crafts by My Kraft Korner.

Event facilitator Laura Peters says: “We’d love to thank Whau Local Board for their support. It’s our first time facilitating the festival at New Lynn Community Centre and we look forward to welcoming and celebrating with our diverse community together.”

Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture. This festival symbolises family reunion and all families will appreciate the Moon in the evening because it is the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar - when the moon is at its fullest.

Similar holidays are celebrated in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and other countries in East and Southeast Asia.

New Lynn Moon Festival night market is funded by the Whau Local Board and facilitated by New Lynn War Memorial Library and New Lynn Community Centre.
