Sporting and supporting talent have been recognised at the annual Howick Sports Awards.

Funded by the Howick Local Board and now into its 10th year of operation, the event celebrates the region’s local talents and their efforts over the past year on and off the field.

Howick Local Board chair Damian Light says that it is important the board and area recognise the individuals and organisations who support them to perform at local, regional, national, and even global levels.

“We have some incredible local talent and it's great to be able to take some time to acknowledge and celebrate their achievements. It’s also important that we acknowledge the people behind these sports starts – the coaches, staff, officials and volunteers who make their success possible.”

Board funding allows free tickets for all finalists, substantial price reductions for other guests, purchasing awards, a guest speaker, and the administration costs.

Event organiser and Pakuranga United Club general manager Mike Bongiovanni adds, “The significance is not only in recognising winners, but also in getting to meet everyone. We’d like to thank Howick Local Board for allowing us to administer the awards, all the volunteers across all codes that make local sports possible, the judges and our MC.”

There were 13 categories with 97 total nominations across 33 clubs/schools.

Some of the highlights of the night included Patrick Holmes from Special Olympics Pakuranga win Internationalist (outstanding athlete performance at the international level) of the Year, 10 different clubs/schools winning awards and 180 in attendance, the largest to date.
