Need in Manurewa exceeds grants budget

A grant for a swimming instructor - and bus driver costs - has been made to support the John Walker Find Your Field of Dreams Foundation.

More than $40,000 has been allocated in Manurewa Local Board grants.

Board chair Glenn Murphy says the call on funds always far outweighs what the board can support.

“We were faced with more than $156,000 in requests when our budget was only about a quarter of that, so some very good groups have missed out and virtually no one has secured all of what they have asked for.
“It’s clear that in the current economic climate community groups are finding it harder to get the support they need to support our people.

“But we would encourage any group that has been unsuccessful to try again in future rounds. Being unsuccessful this time does not mean groups can’t be I the future.”

He says while funding was limited, some great groups were funded, including organisations working with homeless, vulnerable youth, schools, the senior community and sports.
